In an English boarding school, my female cousins learned a shortened version of this song which they used for choosing one person from a group, in the same way as we use “Eeny meeny miny mo”. The words had become:
Im pom pee polynee polynesty,
Im pom pee, polynee.
Aca-Demy so-fa-me,
Aca-Demy push-push!
At school in Bristol, England in the 60s we sang a version of the chorus as a clapping game. Two girls would clap their own hands and then “high five” each other in a sequence that went with the “nonsense rhyme” (as we called it).
Im pom pee, polinee, polinisca
Im pom pee, polinee
Im pom pee, polinee, polinisca
Im pom pee, polinee
